NillI was torn between 4 and 5 stars. Ideally, I would have liked to choose 4.5 stars. The property is beautiful in all aspects, and the owners have taken great care to inform guests thoroughly about pretty much everything--e.g., check-in procedures, history of the property, things to do in the area, local restaurants/coffee shops/breweries. The latter three were communicated via an informational book they made for each room. Things that could be improved/changed in my opinion: 1) There was no source of filtered water anywhere to be found; there was a large glass bottle of (presumably) filtered water in our room, but in the main house where the coffee and tea are located, there was no source of water; 2) There were no decaffeinated tea or coffee options; 3) I don't say this with malice, but the "pastries" were very marginal, bordering on "not good;" it might be better to not offer any breakfast items, or to offer something like Belvita or perhaps a "higher end" prepackaged item of some sort; I know that presents a certain image that the owners may not want, but again, the breakfast items offered were--I apologize--just not very good; 4) The coffee was sub-par, with essentially no robustness at all; I would suggest a Keurig machine with stainless steel reusable baskets and paper filters that can be put inside the baskets, both of which are readily obtainable on Amazon. This is a beautiful place with a quiet and central location, so I strongly recommend it overall. I just think a few tweaks would make it almost perfect. The pictures are: the main room (sitting room) in the mansion, our room in the carriage house (Brule River Room), and the marvelous sun room where I wrote this review.

NillThe location/neighborhood was quiet, the room was comfortable and clean. The grounds were lovely. We felt safe and “at home” on the hill. We would have enjoyed learning more about the history of Salyards and even the “Hewitt” our room was named after. Navigating the cast iron tub was a bit challenging without grab bars. Breakfast was basic: coffee, tea, fruit, muffin/scone. This was our first trip to Duluth and definitely grounded us for a wonderful vacation with fond memories to cherish!

NillWe were told there was a garage since we were traveling by motorcycle, there was not. Needs painted and updated outside. The lamps flickered all the time, thought maybe it was just the bulbs but it happened with three different lamps and none of them would charge phones even though the phones showed they were connected. There was a large jet tub in our room, nice! But wait, we couldn't regulate the water temp to get enough hot water in it. I sent a note to the VRBO rep and said we had a few issues and would like to pass them onto the owners or managers but we never heard back from them except for a generic email asking us to rate them...so here we are. Too much to pay for these kinds of issues. Hope they get them straightened out!

Nillmy fiancée and i stayed here from april 16th to 19th in the north shore retreat room (she wanted a jetted tub, i just wanted to be with her). the room itself was cozy, well-decorated, and we enjoyed all of the little notes telling us about the history of the mansion, how to properly use certain amenities, and things to do in duluth. i hadn’t been since i was about ten but she had never been so the ideas on places to visit were very helpful for us! the stay itself was quiet, romantic, and well needed for both of us. we treated it as our engagement getaway and would love to come back to salyards one day! such a beautiful mansion in a nice area - fairly close to just about everything we wanted to do (most drives were a maximum of 10 minutes) and we enjoyed seeing the deer in the yard every so often. :) definitely consider salyards over a hotel any day!

NillWe had a lovely visit to Salyard’s Mansion in Duluth! The Ryerson Suite, and the mansion itself, was charming and cozy. As a “boutique hotel” it’s NOT a bed and breakfast. They did have coffee, tea, yummy homemade muffins, scones, etc. in the foyer in the morning. The living room was decorated very nicely and the all-season porch had places to sit and visit. The building felt safe with codes to enter, and we were free to come and go without bothering anyone. Our suite had its own sitting room and fireplaces in each room. Dozens of small touches made our stay perfect! We will be back to Salyard’s Mansion!

NillSuch an adorable spot. We stayed in the guest house, and the room had a hot tub in the room which was nice. It wasn’t cleaned out or something because there was black residue in there once we drained it, and we weren’t dirty. Otherwise, cute spot with a beautiful property. In the morning you can go to the main house for coffee and pastries. Would stay again!
