It seems to be the norm for lodging operators to just let guests do self-check in. This is not hospitality to me. I owned a B&B for many, many years and ALWAYS greeted people when they checked in--even when a plane was late at night and arrival was delayed. The only personal contact we had with the manager was when we were scolded for parking on the grass instead of a parking lot quite a ways away from the room. It would be so easy for the owners to designate a small little parking area in front with some pavers to the door so guests do not have to schlep bags clear across a lawn. And then leaving in the morning, the grass was wet. Now that is certainly not a big deal, but it's not ideal, either. I booked Thompson Cottages because the Thompsons once stayed at my establishment and years later--having kept their card--|I decided to book with them when I finally got back to New England for a vacation.|Most of these good reviews may have been when they operated the cabins, but now daughter Katherine seems to be busy with her family and no doubt is over-worked.|The rooms are old and need updated, and the lack of cell service is most annoying.|Disclaimer: Katherine did say upon booking that there was self-check in and limited cell service. But I would think a WIFI system would be available there. Maybe not.|The Maine Coast is beautiful but would certainly book elsewhere next time.

The Thompson Cottages are a quiet, perfect escape with quintessential Maine views. We chose the tan cottage across the street from the dock. It was private and extremely clean. The bathroom and floors seemed recently redone. The hosts live on the property and are so welcoming and kind. They even bake pie for you! (We chose lemon and chocolate- both amazing). Robinson's is a famed seafood establishment across the street and we enjoyed the proximity for a quick chowder run- yet the cottage is up the hill so it remains private. There is much to do in Boothbay Harbor and on Southport and this is a great spot to enjoy it all!

We lucked out to grab a few days here and were so pleasantly surprised by the place we're hoping to book for next year and have told all our family and friends. The pictures online don't do it justice - the location is spectacular and the cottages are really nice and quaint. Bar none, the best part were the hosts. Alice and Dick are two of the nicest people we have ever met. From a trip on their boat around the harbour, freshly baked pie and general amazing hospitality, they were amazing. The only bad part is how booked up they are and trying to get a spot!

We got to Thompson Cottages very late. Merle had told us earlier to give him a call when we got there and he would get us settled in. He was such a gentleman. Even though it was nearly midnight, he guided us through the woods to our cozy cabin and explained everything. The cabin was perfect! The next morning we sat out on the porch and took in the gorgeous views of the Atlantic ocean. Our stay was so much fun; no TV, no internet, no stress. We went up to the main house and got some books and monopoly. But, we were never bored. We visited several towns nearby and went to Hardy Boats and went on a seal and puffin boat tour. A special treat was the 4th of July fireworks display at Damariscotta. We will definitely be back next year and hopefully for years to come.

We rented the dockside cottage for a week in July 2009. It was very clean and well appointed. The porch overlooking the dock and Townsend Gut were great. We sat and watched the boats every morning and evening. We docked our small boat right at our back door which was very convenient. From there we explored the coast from Port Clyde to the Kennebec and all points in between. The owners were very thoughtful and attentive; they went above and beyond to make us feel at home.

I have been going to Thompson's Cottages for about 6 years now and have come to think of Alice and Dick as part of my extended family. They are gracious hosts and have provided me with an excellent 'Maine' experience, from trips on their boat to the wonderful blueberry pie. The view from the White Cottage is ever changing and cathartic. A perfect place to get away from it all.

we have been staying at the Thompson Cottages in Southport Maine for a number of years. Last year we missed our visit..this year we were there for Memorial Day Weekend! What a delight nothing has changed..cabin (we call the Lobster Shack) right on the water, wonderful views, Clean, and welcoming and a King Size bed! Alice and Dick have thought of everything right down to the lobster pot. Can't wait for our next visit..It will be soon!

I stayed there several years ago and was taken by the lack of certain modern conveniences, specifically wifi. The phones that were apparently once part of each cabin had been removed but the glaring lack of cell service on most of the property made emergency contact abilities practically zero.||||I was also taken by the rather poor condition of the windows and other items in the cabin I stayed at. I understand all about business operations and the cost of running one, but the extremely draft windows (I stayed early in the season) were rather off-putting. The price for the units is not cheap and in fact tends towards higher that others in the area. Yes, location can command rates, and booking percentages can also help set pricing, but I felt that the price wasn't commensurate to the services offered.
