After a rather arduous journey, we arrived at Ahilya Fort Heritage Hotel, Maheshwar, situated overlooking the river Narmada. This jewel of a place, off the regular tourist route was an unexpected treat! We stepped into verdant garden, glistening in the morning sunshine, interspersed with brilliant flowers in hues of every kind. This was the beginning of a taste of heaven. ||Their staff welcomed us with warm smiles and garlands of marigold, a most personalised touch. Our living quarter, the Narmada Suite, was an elegant mixture of old-world charm and modern-day amenities, that was most comfortable.||Our daily menu, well presented, was sumptuous. All the produce comes from their vast, organically grown gardens and is cooked to perfection. Each meal was a treat to all our senses, served in different locations of the garden, another ingenious idea! Special mention must be made of the array of house-made jams, cooked by Prince Richard Holkar himself. ||The staff are a warm and caring group of people, who go out of their way to make you feel “royal” and take the time to talk and interact, on a one-on-one basis.||We were lucky to experience the Holy River Festival. At dusk, hundreds of lit diyas float down the river, a mesmerising sight! The faithful come to take a dip in the Narmada, to wash away their sins and honour the holy Narmada with these beautiful diyas.||We truly cherished this experience and cannot wait to visit again, for a wholesome, memorable, nurturing experience.|Sheila Appa

Ahilya Fort, in the central Indian town of Maheshwar, sits high above the sacred river Narmada. Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar ruled here from 1765 to 1796 and built Ahilya Wada, her personal residences, offices, and darbaar audience hall, within the fort. In the year 2000, Prince Richard Holkar, her descendant and son of the last Maharaja of Indore, converted his home in Ahilya Wada into a guest residence, today known around the world as the Ahilya Fort Hotel. The Ahilya Fort Hotel has 19 rooms of character, set in six buildings of the 18th century, with modern amenities and comforts. Guests stroll through 3 acres of courtyards, fountains, and gardens that link areas within the Wada. It is easy to find a secluded spot to read a book, sip some tea, or just watch the butterflies flutter by. NB: Many of our rooms are accessed via a flight of 10-15 steps, however ground floor rooms are available on request. The hotel is well located to explore the highlights of Maheshwar, including its bustling village markets and riverside complex of temples and cenotaphs

Check out pictures .Its Old world charm like my grandmothers haveli. This place consumed me completely and it’s really detailed. Ahilya Fort Hotel in Maheshwar is a breathtaking and incredibly beautiful heritage retreat. It’s peaceful and provides a sense of mindfulness for both the mind and body. Our family of six thoroughly enjoyed our four-night stay in this palace hotel and relived the history of Maheshwar. The hospitality of the staff is truly unmatched. They work tirelessly with smiling faces and respond to guests with enthusiasm. The staff went above and beyond to accommodate our needs, planning a heritage walk and boat ride even with a tight schedule due to a dignitary visit. They made us feel important by organizing a special Dussehra Pooja. I will never forget this experience, and I truly didn’t want to leave. If you love old havelis, want to experience Marathi vadas, and appreciate architecture and culture, you must visit this place.
