Birder's Den Eco Friendly Resort

Perfect place for you if you are a bird lover or even if you go with your family. The ambience and surroundings are amazing with excellent service. Food is very tasty and they serve everything hot and freshly made. Limited options in lunch and dinner but whatever they provide is truly awesome. Bhaskar at the restaurant is super attentive to all your requests. The place is paradise for bird lovers and they have a bird hide from where you could easily spot 50-60 bird species throughout the day. If you are lucky you can even get the yellow throated martens. Sattal and neighbouring Pangot had been on our wishlist ever since we had begun birdwatching in earnest. We eventually found an opportunity during the Deepavali of 2024. We flew from Mumbai to Delhi, stayed overnight and caught an Alliance Air flight from Delhi to Pantnagar next morning. Most of Uttarakhand does not have the terrain for full-fledged airports. It only has two airports at the time of writing, one each for its two regions: Garhwal (Jolly Grant Airport at Dehradun) and Kumaon (Pantnagar Airport). Pantnagar offers quick access to the hills of Kumaon from Delhi. After a nearly two-hour ride from Pantnagar Airport, we were at Birders Den, Sattal. The place had connections with a respected birdwatching guide and naturalist in the Himalayas, Hari Lama. We learned that his efforts to pioneer birding in the nineties had put Sattal and Pangot on the map. He had also curated the hide here which served as a model for many other hides in the region, in terms of food and grain choices and the landscape. When we reached, it was 11:15 and 19 °C. Optimal weather for the Himalayan outdoors. During our stay there, the temperature never fell below 11 °C at Sattal even during chilly pre-dawn. We usually had to contend with sunrise around 06:00 and sunset around 17:45. The premises hosted four buildings: three residential and one administrative. Two of the residential buildings had four rooms each, two on each of the two floors. We were given a room on the upper floor and it turned out to be a blessing. The buildings were close to the hide. Ours was immediately adjacent and a climb down the stairs took us to the hide. The stairs themselves gave us two lifers within minutes of arrival: the almost comically unique looking White-crested Laughingthrush and the ubiquitous Gray Treepie whose raucous calls were all over the place. Buoyed, we went down to the hide and the birding bonanza began. We were newbies to the hide experience and did not know what to expect. On one side of the hide, stools and chairs were laid out in a space that could house ten birdwatchers side by side from one end to the other comfortably. On the other side of the hide was a carefully curated landscape of tree stumps in which food and grains were placed on a daily basis to attract birds and form a habit. The Gray Treepie was the first bird that we took note of and soon, it became akin to the House Crow with its omnipresence. The caretakers of Birders Den laid out two kinds of spreads. For us humans, breakfast usually involved Paratha, Omelette, Bread Toast, Poha and Bananas. Excellent fare for a day in the field. For lunch or dinner, Roti, Sabzi, Dal, Chawal, which is a byword for North Indian food itself. For the avians, the buffet involved peanuts, papaya chunks, other grains and chicken, which was especially relished by one of the handsomest birds on display: the Red-billed Blue Magpie. Before we knew it, the highly sought after Common Green Magpie, a more solitary creature, showed up. We found out later that some birdwatchers had gone hither and thither and others had waited for hours in the hide for a tantalizing glimpse of this colourful bird, only in vain. We were among a few staying at this place during our stay dates. . The place also allowed outsiders to spend time at their hide at a cost of Rs. 1000 per pax (Nov 2024). The room upstairs gave me sightings both in front and at the back from the comfort of my bed. I can hardly conceive of a more lazy birding experience. I saw the following: Gray Treepie, Crimson Sunbird, Hume's Warbler, White-throated Fantail, Red-billed Leiothrix, White-crested Laughingthrush, Himalayan Bulbul, Mountain Bulbul, Green-backed Tit, Himalayan Black-lored Tit, Black-throated Tit, Indian White-Eye and the Common Green Magpie. The embarrassment of riches that is the birding diversity here along with the excellent caretakers at this property make it a perfect choice for a birdwatcher.

I had the most wonderful experience here. It is all you need for a recharging vacation. The manager and the staff are very efficient and polite. The food is amazing. It's a must stay place.

The experience at the resort was great. The staff and host was very courteous and helpful. The food was good. The rooms were spacious yet beautiful furniture. The surroundings are very peaceful and quite. We could do bird watching in the morning. So many species could be found and adored. The whole resort is covered with dense forests which gives a wild and adventurous vibe to the whole space.

Stay in Birder's Den Eco Friendly resort is a fabulous experience in itself. Nestled among forest and mountains, this is a magical place. There are pretty good cottages with all the amenities of urban life, yet gives you the feel of a jungle living. The service of the lodge is impeccable. The staffs are very polite, friendly and the food is great. I loved the place and would want to visit again.

An amazing destination near Bhimtal for bird enthusiasts, Birder's Den is a must-visit spot for anyone wishing to witness the region's beautiful avian species. Boasting abundant natural beauty, tastefully designed rooms, and a superb bird hide that attracts numerous birds, Birder's Den offers an unforgettable experience. The service and food were simply amazing, and we thoroughly enjoyed our time there.

The perfect place for wildlife photographers. Various species of birds , hens can be found. Great locality , service and excellent food!
