NillA three-star hotel with (less than) one star service - appalling. I stayed at this hotel for a work-related trip, as it happened to be closest to the business I was visiting. Despite being marketed as an "international-grade" hotel, none of the staff could speak or understand English. Luckily I was fluent in Mandarin (the official language of the PRC), although even then staff seemed to be uncomfortable with anything other than Cantonese. The rooms, while modern, had signs of poor maintenance, hidden behind the gaudy post-communist Nouveau riche aesthetics. Room lights were dim, and blown bulbs were actually left unfixed until a guest moves in and complains. Cleaning staff even informed me that upper floor rooms with balconies often flooded in heavy rains due to poor workmanship. Non-smoking floors and rooms reeked of nicotine, indicating that hotel staff do not actually enforce the purported ban on smoking indoors. In fact, guests freely smoke in corridors and raise havoc. Although "Do Not Disturb" signs are provided, in reality staff are either illiterate (plausible given that they are usually hired from outlying rural areas) or ignore them, and there are no safes. Avoid leaving valuables in your luggage. Although the hotel described itself on Chinese booking websites as offering complementary 30 RMB business breakfast sets, in reality the restaurants only serve Cantonese-style banquets for all three meals, served in badly chipped crockery. No accommodation for those who are vegetarian, have allergies or other dietary requirements. Free wifi is provided, but only if you have the WeChat app on your phone; a sign at the front desk indicates that this is to comply with Chinese government policy allowing them to monitor all guests' internet activity. Laptops cannot be used unless you set up a Mobile Hotspot on your phone and run a VPN. Even then, signal reception is generally poor to non-existent, you're much better off with mobile data from a local SIM card. Access to public transport is by the local 343 bus at a nearby bus stop, or a 20~30min walk to the Hongwei station of the Guangzhou Metro's Knowledge City branch of Line 14. Expect up to an hour's commute to Baiyun Airport, and two hours or more if you're heading into the CBD. Shopping and dining is limited to various street stalls and eateries in the nearby Fengweicun (Phoenix Tail Village), with poor hygiene. Eventually, I was so disgusted by the hotel and its surroundings that I moved out on the third day, to a cleaner, cheaper and better serviced apartment just around the corner. I have since been informed by my business contact that the reason for the poor service quality at the hotel is because it and the entire village will be demolished in the future, as part of the redevelopment of the area into the Sino-Singapore Guangzhou Knowledge City business park (hence the apparent reluctance by the hotel owners to improve or maintain their premises). So in summary, tourists must avoid this hotel and outlying area at all costs; business travelers should be able to easily find better alternatives nearby.
