We stayed here on our second night at Tiger Leaping Gorge. The room was only Y60 for a double with ensuite - quite a bargain compared to the guest houses along the trail. There weren't many people staying in Walnut Garden because most people returned to Lijiang from Tina's on the 4PM bus. We stayed the extra night at Woody's and walked down to the Gorge the following day before sharing a mini-van from TIna's to Shangri-La. There are a few options between Tina's and Woody's including Sandy's Guesthouse, Bridge Cafe and Guesthouse, Tibet Inn and Sean's Guesthouse. We didn't have a close look at any of them but Woody's had a fantastic location, overlooking the gorge with an outdoor garden and eating area.||||Not sure if the older comments still apply (bad blood between Sean's and Woody's), but Jenny was running the show when we were there. She provided fantastic service and made sure we were well fed and looked after. The food was also not half bad, especially the Chinese styled scrambled eggs. The bed we slept in appeared to be pretty new but the rooms are fairly basic, similar to most of the other places along the trail. The guesthouse was very quiet and relaxing - there was barely any traffic along this part of the road. Tina's is conveniently located at the end of the trail but we found the place quite big and sterile with a lot of people coming and going. The walk to Walnut Garden takes an additional 40mins and you can also walk down to the Gorge from Walnut Garden, ending up near TIna's. We would definitely recommend this place to anyone wanting to spend longer at the Gorge.

We stayed at Woody’s as part of a two week bicycle tour of Yunnan.||Woody’s guest house is the first hotel one encounters when approaching Tiger Leaping Gorge from the east [as we did]. Conversely, it is the last hotel of Tiger Leaping Gorge when approaching from the west [the way most people arrive]. As we appoached from the east we saw a tidy wooden chalet style guesthouse. Given the proximity of the rugged Dragon Snow Mountain, one could imagine for a moment they were in Austria or Switzerland. ||We soon learned that Woody’s Guesthouse has 3 levels of rooms [they only promote standard and delux, but there are definite differences in the available standard rooms].. The lowest standard is across the street from the Gorge in a cinder block building whose entry way is across a foul smelling walkway and up a similarly foul smelling staircase. The rooms in this building are a mixture of western and asian toilets and a mixture of single and double beds. The cleanliness, ambiance, and views also vary for rooms in this building. If choosing this building, make sure you get to see your room and that it’s up to your liking / needs.||There are three intermediate level rooms in the single story building on the Gorge side of the road. They are dark with simple furniture and simple bedding. Some might choose to call it advanced camping.||After being shown the standard rooms, we stayed in the deluxe rooms, which are in the newest building – the two story challet on the Gorge side of the road. The building looks very nice from the outside. Once inside décor is all wood and the bedrooms leave one with a feeling of “OK I can live with a few inconveniences, this is China after all”. The bathroom however was well below expectations. Ours had a terrible odor—probably mold – whenever the shower was used. The odor was so bad we had to keep the door closed and the bathroom fan running. The odor would persist until dry, and drying would take a long time since – in typical Chinese fashion, the shower is in the middle of the bath area and gets the entire room wet. There was a grunge of some sort where the bathroom walls met the floor. And since the floor was a bit uneven, there was shallow puddle-ing in spots. We even had a resident 2 inch long centipede living in one corner. Friends we were traveling with had no hot water in their bedroom for either of the two days/nights that they stayed.||Again in typical Chinese fashion, the beds were just box springs with thin a thin pad on top. And the interior lights were few, of low wattage, and half were burned out. ||In nice weather [warm & dry] dinners are served in a courtyard below the deluxe rooms that has a splendid view of the mountains surrounding Tiger Leaping Gorge. Dinners are off a limited menu, which included some western dishes. Note however those western items are quite different than one would get in US or EU [pizza is a good example]. We were most suspicious about the quality and content of local meats. ||There was no Internet at Woody’s guest house and none in the surrounding area. The staff spoke some English and one could get by without an interpreter by pointing and imaginative explaining.||Certainly the key feature of Woody’s guest house was the splendid view of Tiger Leaping Gorge. This view is best enjoyed from a courtyard dinner.

Seems like the two options in Walnut Garden are Wood's and Sean's (and there's some bad blood between them). This is actually too bad, because the wonderful setting deserves better. And, frankly, it's rather surprising it doesn't have anything better because Tiger Leaping Gorge has been on the beaten path for over twenty years. (It seems like Tina's up the road, is better.) Anyway, I think we were greeted by the son of the eponymous owner. Son of Woody showed us a standard room, which looked pretty dingy, so we took a wood-paneled "deluxe" room that has a great view of the gorge and the opposing cliff face. The view was outstanding, perhaps the best thing about the room. It was fairly clean and the bathroom was fine, except for a massive spider that I killed, just to be on the safe side. (I did see its smaller brother crawling on the ceiling later, but managed to sleep soundly anyway.) The food was nothing special. (Staff at Sean's, which looked busier, told us they would not serve us dinner after we told them we were staying at Woody's.) A couple staying in the room next to ours decided to cut short their stay after their daughter was bitten by bugs--presumably bedbugs--on the night we stayed. Also, although I mentioned to Son of Woody that we wanted to take the daily direct bus to Lijiang, he failed to mention that we would have to book ahead of time, so we weren't able to take it the next day, when all the seats were taken. Way to go the extra mile, Son!

We stayed at Chateau de Woody after two days of hiking in Tiger Leaping Gorge and loved it. The owner and staff were very friendly and helpful, the room was spotless, food was excellent and the terrace overlooking the gorge was a great place to relax and soothe aching muscles. If you walk as far as Walnut Garden I cannot recommend Woody's enough.

We arrived 14 nov deciding not to stay at Tina's as when we called for coffee there were lots of flies buzzing around the dining room and people smoking despite the no smoking sign.||We were the only ones staying and it was difficult to track the owner down to order food or drink. In the end we went to the kitchen which is attached to their room. They were eating & said they'd come down after their food.||The food was good and cheap.||We'd decided that as our bus to Shangri-la wasn't until 3pm that we'd have a lazy morning and late breakfast once the sun had started coming up over the mountains as the terrace at Woody's is fab with amazing views. Unfortunately we were woken at 8.30am by a knock on the door saying the family were going to Lijiang and therefore we couldn't get any coffee or breakfast. They did apologise and brought hot water, tea and some fruit. Not a great start to the day though. Hopefully we'll be able to get food at Sean's as we don't fancy eating at Tina's-it appears they have poor food hygiene due to the big government sign there giving them the lowest rating. ||The room was only ¥120 so good value. It's wood panelled, graffitied with people 'checking in' and there are a few holes in the wood and it's a little tired. It's ok though & still better than I expected on the gorge! Electric blanket, toiletries, kettle (no cups though) provided. Linen was clean.||Instant hot water although water doesn't drain away so 15 hrs later the bathroom floor is still wet through.||Excellent wifi.||Could be better with more dedicated staff. We felt like we were intruding rather than it being a b&b to welcome people at the end of a trek.

We were pleased to find such a beautiful place to stay in the Tiger Leaping Gorge area. Our room had a fantastic view of the gorge, it was very clean and the bed was pretty comfy (for an Asian bed). The bathroom was also clean and simple. If you go into the dining area you can usually find people to help you with whatever you need. We ate there too and it was clean and good Yannan food.

Together with three other people I met on the trek in the Gorge, we were the only ones staying at Woody's at the time. The service was excellent (lots better than at the Halfway House). They invited us up to their own place and offered us yak butter tea, which, unfortunately I found disgusting, but hey, it's a local tradition.||||The food was great, the views were gorgeous and the room was good and affordable

I stayed here actually in 1998... So my review is only for the lunch we had there in the trip I made with friends in October this year. As with other reviews, no one was in the main reception / dining area when we arrived, but they did have signs saying where to find help so we were able to quickly find the lady that was serving at the time. Food was great, generous proportions and the lady was very helpful in getting us a car to go back to where we were staying. We also tried to book a car from Sean's place, but he really was totally not interested. When I was here in 1998, Sean's place and Chateau de Woody were THE places (only places) but the balance seems to have been tipped with the road connecting through and Tina's home being the central stop...
