Great Wall Inn Gubeikou

Staying at The Great Wall Inn was one of the best decisions we've made in China. Situated at only two hours by bus from Dongzhimen Station (or even less if you go by taxi) from Beijing, this is a completely different experience that being in the city, and I truly recommend. ||||After a busy week in Beijing, staying at this accommodation gave us the opportunity to have real contact with the people and the rural world. Two white extra confortable beds were waiting for us when we arrived. The inn is not luxurious but this is not what we were looking for, it's extremely clean and silent in the night. All rooms are situated around a roofed patio where you can have breakfast, lunch and dinner. The best thing is that all meals are cooked on place with local ingredients and even you can see the hosts cooking in an immaculate clean kitchen. ||||There's some extras at the inn to appreciate the stay even more: for example, you can assist to a class to learn to cook a local meal, which we did, and also you can take a trekking package to walk on the wall, which we did too. We've learned how to cook jiaozi and also huoguo (hot pot), which we really enjoyed. Taking contact with this rural world, their meals and customs was extremely valuable for us and made of this an unforgettable trip. Sometimes we even ate with the hosts which made us feel we were part of the family!||||We did the trekking from Jinshanling, coming back on foot to the accommodation. It was memorable and I really recommend doing some of the trekking offered, guided by Sun, the host. ||||They speak English which made everything so much easier. The accommodation offer a pick up service from the local bus station and also from Beijing. ||||Thanks to the hosts and Lee for doing of this an unforgettable stay. Hope we can come back one day!

We stayed one night in this tiny guesthouse. The host and his wife are very friendly and joyful people and I loved the way they put all the guests together for dinner. We met wonderful people and listened to their adventures in this huge country. The food was very good and more than enough! The owner was going to bring some of the guests to the best spot for the sunset early in the morning. |The rooms were warm enough (the hall a bit cold) and the beds were super clean. We slept perfectly well.|Thanks, I will never forget this place. When we left, the nice lady went out to wave until we disappeared. So sweet!|One guest told me that the owner had waited for him at the train station to bring him to the guesthouse. Perfect.

The outside didn’t look much but pleasantly surprised when we got inside. The amenities are quirky (shower over the toilet) and a bit basic but we had a really comfortable stay. The bed was big and comfortable. Everything was very clean and the large white fluffy towels wouldn’t be bettered by a 5 star hotel. The dinner was exceptional. Cooked in front of us by the host. Local fare but delicious. If I had one complaint it was the attempt to serve an “English Breakfast”. We would have preferred being offered the local dish given to our guide and driver.

Our stay came as part of our decision to walk with Great Wall Hiking, with Gubeikou being the not restored section, and Jinshaling being restored. The walking is a bit challenging for the relatively unfit, but very rewarding.||||It’s a small complex of rooms around a central eating area, cosy with other guests but surprisingly sound proofed. It’s relatively new, beds are comfy, the toilet and shower western, albeit a little quirky.||||Meals were included, and were exceptionally generous, as well as tasty.||||The owner Sun is extremely hospitable and fun, and made our stay honestly. He walks with the groups, and does well.||||Highly recommended, it’s more hostel than hotel, but a great experience

I stayed here two nights as part of a three day Great Wall trek I was doing (see my separate review under Great Wall Hiking). It is owned by the same people. The place itself is clean and it is nice to have a laundry facility available for a small price. The people who manage it were friendly. |The rooms were clean, and the bathroom was an “all in one” , meaning that there was no isolated shower area, so the toilet and surrounds would get wet after showering. Be sure to keep the toilet paper dry! That was all pretty manageable, but the weirdest thing was that the rooms were like prison cells. All of them had no windows to the outside world. The windows looked onto the dining room. So literally if I had the curtain open (which you would do, otherwise it definitely feels like a cell), then you are literally in full view of anyone who happens to be in the dining room. It was very odd. |As I was here as part of a tour, my dinner meals were eaten here. The “Western food” was pretty awful. I saw the tour owner and the manager’s table eating Chinese food which looked much better. My guide thought the food was so bad, he literally ate a bowl of instant noodles instead, just to give some perspective! However, on the second night I had a “dumpling cooking lesson” which was great, and then got to eat the dumplings which were delicious. So that was much better. Overall, there isn’t a lot of choice in the area, so I can’t really say try elsewhere. But if you end up here, temper your expectations.

A big group of is stayed overnight and and walked the wall section from here. Perfect spot. Very basic, but wonderful staff and clean rooms and bathrooms. (Shower, toilet and basin in one room, but works well). They made us a great lunch and we really enjoyed the stay. Definitely a recommendation!!

Basic accommodation but clean and good food. Run by very helpful and friendly hosts who were very accommodating and even offered us an opportunity to make our own dumplings for dinner!! Location was good with close access to the Wall.

Stated hers overnight while trekking The Great Wall of China, and was pleasantly surprised! Rooms are great, clean and conformable. Best pillows all trip lol! Owners are hospitable and nice, good was great as well.
