Definitely one of the better options for Pingyao. Location is excellent, a stone's throw from the North Gate where you can buy tickets to climb the wall and visit the preserved buildings. Stayed in one of the tatami rooms which was fine for a night (no idea why there are Japanese-style tatami rooms here but there must be a backstory). The rooms are dated but maintained well enough. The hotel organized pickup from Taiyuan Airport which went smoothly, and free drop-off at Taiyuan Station. Note the main station (for high-speed trains) is not the one close to the city wall, but about 15 minutes away by car). As others have mentioned the staff is not confident in English but if you've traveled this far in China you can manage.

The hotel is in a terrific location, righ in one of the lively streets of the ancient town. The staff is very accommodating and trying to help despite the language barrier. The complementary pick up an drop off from the train station is greatly appreciated. The hotel as a whole has a lot of character, but the room itself is a bit small and dark. The seats in the room are the most uncomfortable imaginable, can't really use them. The breakfast was basic, but with good coffee.

We booked a deluxe family suite which was supposed to sleep 4 but on arrival discovered this is actually two separate rooms. They are not next door and there is no connecting door. This is not suitable for a family unless you want to be split up. The second room offered is much smaller and basic than the main room. We got them to make bed on the floor for our children who were small enough to sleep there. Not what we expected. ||The room itself was very nicely furnished and very spacious. The hotel is lovely and very well presented in a traditional Chinese style, as befits the location. The room is well equipped and provided plenty of toiletries. The electric toilet was rather silly though, as it had lots of features but would not flush. I don't see why they would install such a strange object. I assume they think it classy but it really was not.||The hotel is situated just inside the pedestrian zone of the ancient city so there is no traffic noise. The room rate includes transfer from the station which we arranged by letting hotel know the train number we would arrive on. Two cars were waiting for us so we went one adult and one child in each. Not sure if they always send two cars though.||Breakfast was very average, the Asian choices not very appealing, and the Western choices not done well. It would be better to offer simpler food done well than trying to be fancy.||The best thing is the location as you are in the ancient city and can easily walk around and see all the sights. There are many restaurants and tourist shops on the road outside. It is not noisy however as it is just far enough from the busy crowded areas.

The location of this hotel is the best selling point: it is situated in the old city, very close to one of the gates and on one of the busiest and nicest streets of Pingyao. ||Lots of shopping, restaurants and historical buildings in the area. The rooms are very nice, with a huge bed and beautiful bathroom. Because of the thick walls you do not hear any street noise, so a good nights rest is assured. ||The service from the hotel is great: free pick up and drop off from the railroad station, helpful information on the towns nicest sights to see and always a welcoming smile. Well done!||Only minor detail: breakfast options are limited, but with so many restaurants in the direct vicinity that is no problem.

Basic but clean hotel in the old center. Over priced. Very unfriendly and unhelpful staff. Not speaking english is no excuse for never smiling or saying hello (in whatever language) when people arrive to your hotel. They didnt tell us that breakfast closes at 830(!) so nothing to eat or drink for us when we woke up at 9am..

My husband and I enjoyed our recent stay here, worth it to visit China’s best preserved ancient city!||Included in the room booking is a car transfer to and from the high speed railway station and the hotel. We emailed the hotel our train information the morning we were due to arrive and the driver was there waiting to pick us up out the front of the station with a sign and our name on it. The driver immediately helped with bags and drove us to the hotel where we were greeted very warmly for check-in. We were also asked for the details of our train the following day so the driver could take us back, and he was there waiting early the next morning to drive us to the station with plenty of time to spare before our train left. This was a fantastic extra offering that we were really grateful for!||We sat down at check-in and the lady on the front desk was so kind. She took us through a map of Pingyao, a suggested site visit route, where to buy tickets, wifi and breakfast information and confirmed pricing clearly so no hidden. Her English was actually really good, but she also had a number of key translations on the phone (site descriptions, suggestions, etc.) which were really helpful too. There is also a discount offered for dining at a nearby restaurant but we ended up trying somewhere else. We were then shown to our room and had key features explained (heating, wifi, tea, water, keys, etc).||The room itself was fine for us, we knew what we were booking, but be sure to read the room type first. Ours was the one with the mattress on the floor so might not be suitable for everyone, but was fine for us! For me the mattress was a little thin, I could feel the floor through it, but my husband thought it was great so really just personal preference.||The room had everything needed, complimentary green tea and bottled water, shower items (shampoo, conditioner, body wash) hair dryer and tv (not that we used it). The shower itself was alright, I prefer a little more pressure but again probably just personal preference as my husband thought it was good. The likelihood of flooding the floor though is high as there’s no dip between the shower and the bathroom, just a shower curtain, but it wasn’t too bad!||The wifi had a few small issues cutting out in the afternoon (about 5pm when we came back to refresh) but worked fine before that (when we checked in) and after (when we returned from exploring the streets at night).||Breakfast was a choice of 2 options (pre-ordered the prior day), Chinese or Western. Breakfast during our stay was served in their first floor restaurant between 7:10-8:45am. E we both had the Chinese style breakfast so can’t comment on the western. We really enjoyed the breakfast despite some of the other reviews we’ve seen! We were served a tray with small plates of a variety of Chinese dishes. Included were 3 steamed dumplings (1 plain, 1 meat and 1 scroll shaped), a bowl of lentil soup, a bowl of mushrooms, a bowl of yams, a bowl of cabbage slaw, a boiled egg, a bowl of fruit (apple and melon) and a drink choice (we had black coffee). We really enjoyed the meal!

In the quaint town of Pingyao, setting you years back in time, this upmarket hotel is quite a contrast. ||Staff is tending to all your needs. We booked a family deluxe suite through Booking and were promised two extra large double beds. The actual situation was one extra large double bed and one extra small tatami double. No way we could fit our family with two teenagers into those. Staff quickly made up by changing us into 2 deluxe doubles (one of which had coffee stains (?) on the ceiling). ||These large rooms, (rather) soft mattresses and a large double bed with soft lining makes you feel like an emperor...||Until||You report for breakfast. You may as well skip this part. We tried the western option and selected fresh strawberry juice as a treat. Well, this still gives us nightmares; a watery pink substance, tasting like a chemical you may use cleaning your house..

Pingyao is not the place that attracts foreign visitors. Most people will fly from Beijing to Xi'an, unaware of the existence of this old town that lies between these two cities. Yet, for those who are really interested in China, this is a must-see place. Although it is not a tourist destination (at least not for Westerners), the city is easily accessible by bullet train. The Water Hotel offers free transport from and to the railway station. Simply send a mail to the hotel with your train details, and the driver is waiting for you with a sign at the exit of the station. Because the hotel is located in the traffic free center of the old town, you will have to walk the last 50 meter. ||The hotel rooms are located around the central patio, where you can relax during the day or even have your breakfast served. The breakfast was included and has to be ordered beforehand: Chinese or Western. The breakfast is simple and more than enough. Some people will prefer a buffet, but this way of serving is in the end far more sustainable.||The staff is not really fluent in English, but they compensate their lack of the language with a total dedication to the guests. And the use of an electronic translator removes any last barrier or not-understanding... When checking in, the staff gives you a city map and explains the most important sites to visit.||The city of Pingyao is not very big but it is packed with old houses, musea, temples, relics and old towers. It's great to stroll through the small streets and imagine how life must have been. ||Just like the city, the hotel is small - actually, there are no large hotels in Pingyao - which gives it a familiar and home-coming feeling. The rooms are OK in size and are very modern (eg. the A/C is state of the art). Because it is off the trodden path, the price is quite reasonable for the quality you get.
