Mary Gold Resort (Hornbill)

On our family trips to Darjeeling and the outskirts (with young children and older parents), we have planned to stay and enjoy a little unorthodox experience and avoid usual suspects such as Kalimpong, Lava, Lolegaon etc and chose a nice little cozy hamlet near Lolegaon, officially known as Charkhole Lole Gaon, located at an altitude of 5,500ft. When our originally planned Homestay just few yards away turned out to be a complete disaster and not family/young children friendly, Anish and his family saved us and it turned out to be a good experience in this homestay. Hornbill Homestay deserves more reviews than what is available so far. Everyone at the locality is very polite, super helpful and Anish/the family provided us with standard clean rooms, very good service. While the weather during April did not provide us the breathtaking views of the mountain ranges/Kanchanjungha, we got a completely different view: how mesmerizing the foggy atmosphere can be in the mountains. The food was really comforting after a long journey: momo, poori sabji, Roti-Chicken or the Pakoras were really good. They were very helpful to cater to our needs and also provided useful guidance. Also the store nearby (Chakum Chukum, a bengali play on the words!) provides outstanding coffee and other everyday items at a very reasonable price, which we preferred over the tea, which would be the only feedback for future improvement. Tips: 1) Try Charkhole during the peak season (Sep end to Feb) for a better view , but if you are looking for the mystic cloudy/foggy look, try before April. April to July is the monsoon season with a quiet period, as we have learned. 2) the Stairs in this homestay is rather steep, so if you have someone elderly with problems walking, see if you can get the room at the ground floor.

It's really good. Husband wife and their mother are great. A cute daughter 💕 they have. Excellent view. Rooms are quite good.

Nice place to stay..you can get a great view of kalimpong at night...rooms are average..foods are good..
