This is my genuine, first-hand experience at Hotel Shivalik in Mcleodganj, where I stayed last weekend with my mother. Please read it till the end! We had booked Room 402, and on first glance, everything seemed fine. However, once we settled in and started checking things more closely, we noticed several issues—most notably, a broken shower knob. This made it impossible to control the water temperature, and we were only getting extremely hot water. I immediately reported the issue to the reception. The guy at the desk acknowledged the complaint but didn’t take any action initially. After several follow-ups, he came to the room, confirmed the knob was broken, and said someone would come to fix it. No one showed up for over an hour. Since we had plans, we asked them to fix it while we were out. The receptionist assured us it would be done before we returned. When we got back and reminded him, he came to the room around 11 PM, made a temporary adjustment, and said the plumber would be up soon—but no one ever came. We waited for an hour and eventually went to bed. The next morning, I again approached the reception and asked why nothing had been done. His response? “The plumber wasn’t there so I slept.” This lack of professionalism was shocking. I requested a room change, but was told no other rooms were available and the issue would be fixed in “just a few minutes.” I had booked a cab for 9 AM to explore local sights—most of which close by 5 PM—but due to these delays and the hotel’s indifferent attitude, we lost valuable time. The plumber finally came an hour later and confirmed that the knob was indeed broken and that the staff was already aware of it when they assigned us the room. When I went down to confront the receptionist, I overheard him on the phone telling the plumber, “Why did you tell her the knob was broken? You could’ve just adjusted it and said anything. Make sure she doesn’t hear this from the stairs.” That confirmed how little they cared about guest experience. Throughout this ordeal, I repeatedly requested either a room change or a temporary room to freshen up so we could go to the temple. They kept wasting our time. After two hours of back-and-forth, they finally offered to change the room—by then, we were already preparing to leave. We were supposed to start our day at 9 AM but ended up leaving only around 11:45 AM due to the hotel’s carelessness. This experience ruined a big part of our trip, and I genuinely regret booking this hotel. Unfortunately, the poor experience didn’t end there. Our return bus was scheduled for the next evening. I often travel to Himachal and usually leave my luggage at the hotel after check-out, then use the hotel washroom to change before catching an overnight bus. Most hotels are cooperative about this, and it’s generally considered a basic courtesy in hospitality. We explained to the receptionist that we’d return around 5 PM to freshen up before our bus and even offered to pay extra just to use the washroom for 10 minutes. Initially, he agreed. But when we came back later, he completely changed his stance and rudely refused. Instead, he directed us to use the staff washroom—which was being used by male employees. As two women travelers, this felt incredibly disrespectful and humiliating. Having stayed at numerous hotels across Himachal, I’ve never encountered such an unprofessional and inconsiderate attitude. My entire family travels frequently, and even in less-than-ideal situations, we’ve never faced anything like this. I would never recommend Hotel Shivalik to anyone under any circumstances.

A very pleasant experience in this hotel. We get access to wonderful scenic beauty from our room window. The location is very appropriate, i.e. right in the middle of main market. Most importantly, parking space is also available in this hotel. 5 stars.

When you look an overall of the room, it seems nice. But the bedsheets are terrible, the mattress completely wasted and dirty, the pillow is a nightmare. Bathroom also dirty. |The blanket old and dirty.|They don’t clean the room while you are staying. |Bathroom also dirty. The sink was leaking.|The only good thing is the location. Near the city center.|
