Dal Lake is near Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir. The second largest lake in Kashmir. During the Mughal period, the Mughal rulers of India especially identified Kashmir and Srinagar as their summer retreats. They developed the Dal Lake precincts of Srinagar into delightful resorts filled with vast Mughal-style gardens and pavilions to enjoy the pleasant cool weather. In order to further develop the lake and its surroundings, the Government of India has started restoration projects with a huge investment of around 11 billion rupees. The lake is about 15.5 km. In winter its temperature sometimes reaches −11 °C (12 °F). During this time the lake freezes.
