New Century Grand Hotel Kaifeng

The hotel is about 3K from the centre of "Old" Kaifeng in a largely new business area within walking distance of a large modern shopping mall.||||The room we had was fine but despite being non-smoking had the distinct obour of cigars. The wall of the shower was mildewed but it wasn't an issue as it was enormous as was the whole room!||||Outside the hotel has a lakeside walk alongside lotus & lily covered waters which was a really nice way to spend some time in the early evening. The views over the lake from the room were great,||||The Chinese restaurant was really good with some of the best dumplings we ate on our trip.||||Breakfast again was really nice with a good mix of western & Chinese food on offer..

I lodged at this hotel together with my coworkers in June this year as a host of an annual conference. The hotel is surrounded with a man-made lake and scenery is pretty good I have to say. I felt pretty refreshed when i open the window, got kind of sense that i was melted by peace finally after almost 2 weeks long intensive travel. The services provided there are ok to me What’s more, the decoration and facility inside are brand new, since this hotel is newly opened for business. I personally recommend this hotel for the venue of conference, and big&official gathering.

We are a family of four traveling around China with two young kids. This was a nice locally managed hotel. It is a new construction. The swimming pool and the views from our room and the restaurant were the best discovered in China so far. Wifi worked unusually well though hotel did not seem to busy while we were there. Safe in room. Breakfast buffet was good for the Chinese fair. A large man-made lake, in which locals actually swim, with some faux ancient constructions lining the lake make this hotel somewhat unique.||Location was not great for touring any sites as the hotel is not in the city centre. However, taxies were plentiful, dirt cheap, and hotel door man was great at telling driver where you want to go (at least one spoke very good English). Traffic was never a problem either.||Near the hotel, there were nice park areas for the kids to enjoy. Also, there was a modern mall a short walk away with a tremendous variety of good but inexpensive restaurants (also KFC and Pizza Hut). Mall also has a modern movie theatre that screens new releases in English at certain times of the day. There is an English language school in the mall that is looking for native English teachers should anyone need to make a couple of bucks!||Over all, we liked this hotel. We are currently staying in a much more up market hotel in Xi'an and my wife just commented to me how much more she liked this hotel in Kaifeng.||A couple of things for which to be careful. First, while the swimming pool is great, the floor in the change room is extremely slippery where wet. Even knowing it is slippery, might not help. Hold on to the walls near the showers. Last, there seems to have once been a pleasant walking route around the lake from the hotel to the mall. It is now closed off. Their is an unpleasant garbage dump now on the mall side of the gate closing off this route. Avoid this path, especially if returning from the mall, so you don't have to tread through the disgusting dump twice.

Kaifeng is not on the foreign tourist’s radar so we weren’t expecting anything special here but the outcome was OK - with some qualifications. Being a Chinese domestic brand it falls short of the ambit five-star claim but takes a passing shot at four – at least by occidental standards. ||Set on a small estate not far from the middle of town and fronting a pleasant lake that has been adorned with some fetching traditional architecture, this modern – perhaps a decade or so old – hotel is assuredly the best Kaifeng has to offer. It displays all the usual oriental ‘first impression’ spectacle but you need to engage soft focus on the detail because that’s where it falters. The service is fine and English is passable but the entire place would be much more comfortable if you were a smoker. In the end this is a very good hotel because it’s better than we expected for where it is and not what it offers. || ||The good: save for a fumble with our reserved no-smoking room, reception was slick and polite. Once we got into what we had reserved, our non-smoking*(see below) king room was clean, spacious, comfortable and in a fair state of repair. Everything expected was there and it mostly worked as expected. The king bed was comfortable, the linens fresh and crisp and there were enough pillows for each of us to find our preference. The bathroom was equally roomy and well-appointed and the entire suite exhibited less wear and tear that we have come to expect from domestic hotels of this vintage. The room (8722) opened to a pleasant balcony with a delightful outlook across the lake and over the hotel’s expansive water features – which would be even better if they had been cleaned. The included wifi worked well on all our devices. The included breakfast taken in a splendid atrium fronting the lake and water features was a fair quality buffet of mostly local staples but see below for the dining experience. ||||The not so good: the turn-down maid serviced our room despite the “do not disturb” sign and the problem with that seemed to be lost on them – even in Mandarin. Our “non-smoking” room on what is supposedly the only “exclusively non-smoking” floor (8) had cigarette burns on the furniture and was provided with a convenient ash tray – decorated with a few mints. We’re not usually offended by cigarette smoke but the air in the hotel’s Chinese restaurant was as murky as the atmosphere of Saturn. The Japanese restaurant was better. The configuration of the breakfast buffet is set up more to impress than to work so gathering your food selections does entail quite a bit of navigation and the traffic conditions are every bit as chaotic as Kaifeng’s roads. Some of the breakfast room furnishings are lamentably worn and soiled which means that you need to focus on the view so as not to depreciate the experience.

This hotel is built beside the lake that is one of the famous historic site in the city. They built a walkway around the lake and it is really relaxing for a morning or evening walk. I saw people swimming and fishing in the lake. The hotel itself lives up to its five star rating. The rooms are big and clean, staff are very courteous, food is excellent. I will definitely stay here again next time. It is also really worth the extra dollar to get a lake view room.

临时到开封第一次入住开元酒店，房间自带阳台可以观赏湖景，有椅子和小桌很惊艳。洗手间也很通透。马桶单独隔间，不透明的木门，空间大私密性好。走廊服务员热情打招呼同时微笑服务，赠送有水果和小礼品，服务娴熟有礼貌。

This is my third time to visit this hotel with my clients since there weren't many five-star rating hotels in Kaifeng. ||||However, we may really need to start looking for different options next time, since we realized that the rooms are getting old. One of us had to change the room since the bathroom was covered with moles! You could also see some spots on the wall or from your room, just getting old! ||||However, if you are looking at the brighter side, the staff were very nice with good English speaking skills. We actually ordered room service one night and the food was actually not bad (try the Kaiyuan Sandwich).||||Overall, Okay stay but we will have to find a new one next time soon!

Lived in Hotel for work from May 2 to July 1, 2017. Lived in 3 different rooms. ||Hotel staff 5/5 although few knew English. ||Food 4.5/5 with 3 restaurants, room service and a bar there's lots to choose from. ||Rooms 4/5 everything great except mould in shower and sink. I recommend bringing flip flops or going to the market and buying some bathroom cleaner. Occasionally the A/C stopped working, they have a portable one while trying to fix it then have me another room at my request. My co-workers say this is probably the best hotel in Kaifeng.
