NillSites aren't actually leveled, which is really unfortunate for a tent camping only location. With that said, it was very quiet at night with beautiful stars to gaze upon. There's a really nice camp site just south with hot water to shower, so save some money and stay here. There are port-o-potties but they ran out of toilet paper. Being your own just to be sure. A lot of mountain bikers used this as their base camp and they were all friendly. Picnic tables and covered awnings for each site. Two water sites for filling up. The water had a nasty tinge to it but is safe to drink. I used an RV filter but it still had an off flavor.

NillStayed here 11th -14th June 2024. The Monday prior to our arrival up to 7 inches of rain had fallen in places and all the trails were closed, they remained closed for the duration of our stay. The site was large and had a canopy over the picnic table. There is very little shade here, natural or otherwise. The flies and ants are plenty, bring a fly swat. The shower block was a few minutes drive away and was always clean and free. As the trails were closed we went into Amarillo each day and visited attractions, which meant going in and out of the park, which was a good 15/20 minute drive. The Thursday night we booked for the Texas Outdoor Musical at the Pioneer Amphitheatre, the performance was really good and other than an interruption for lightning, the real thing, we thoroughly enjoyed every moment. We would recommend booking for a show, if you can. The park staff were nice and pleasant and we had no problems during our stay.

NillGreat location for hiking, near THE BEST bathrooms and showers we’ve used in Texas, and very easy to drive to other areas for hiking if you don’t feel like hiking TO the hike. Our site was very level. The covered patio tables at each spot are very convenient. Bring an extra tarp to makeshift some shade since there is none in the area. Downsides are there’s nothing to break up sound. Our first couple of nights were fine and everyone was respectful of everyone else’s sites. Since it was Memorial Day weekend, there were a ton of family parties and they partied till 1am with generators and music blaring. Absolutely no privacy once you’re out of your tent and noise travels like we’ve never experienced. Another thing to plan for is THE FLIES. Bug spray doesn’t do anything to the flies and horse flies. Everyone in the campground area was swatting at flies and getting very irritated. These flies are massive and they bite. My wife and I each had fly swatters and we probably have a body count of 100 a day. I saw some other reviews about the flies and rolled my eyes since it’s camping w/o power….I was very wrong. Never experienced flies like this anywhere else I’ve ever camped.

NillGreat campsite with clean water and port-a-potties. Located in a great spot in the park to access the trails for Mtb riding. The showers weren't too far of a drive either. Shower facilities were clean and warm.

NillI enjoyed the experience. Reminiscent of the weekend camping trips when I was 10 years old. I planned ahead of time for the brutal sun and brought reflective coverings and positioned my tent east/west. Instead of building a fire in the grill, I made a canned heat stove using a stainless steel utensil holder. Just right for coffee, oatmeal, and soup!!!

NillPicking tables, shelters and fire rings at each campsite is nice. Water is really accessible. Only downside is the sites don't have much privacy, and sounds carry. I could hear every word of the conversation between people arriving and setting up a tent at 12:30am 😑

NillThis campsite was very large, and covered patio made it nice for shade when the temperature in mid-October hit over 100º F on the canyon floor. There is plenty of space for tents and everyone was respectful of noise after 10 pm. Thanks also to TPWD for installing three porta-potties - made a HUGE difference in comfort levels for us.
