We stayed at The Shire Hobbiton during June 2025 for 3 nights and I want to share my experience with you.|1. Location - Excellent location. Outside the village but close enough to everything. Everything around is green, amazing view, quiet.|2. Room - The rooms are of a very high standard. Clean. Maintained. Spacious. Shower and toilet in the room. Hot water. Strong WiFi. Privacy.|3. Service - The level of service and hospitality we received from the owners of the place was above all expectations. They responded to our every request and question. Very polite. Very pleasant conversationalists. We got to talk to Shanil (the owner) quite a bit, he is a very interesting and intelligent person who very quickly became a friend.|I have no doubt that we will return there and I highly recommend staying with them.

Kalga itself is a very picturesque and beautiful place to stay. It is quiet and clean with very welcoming and hospitable community. Staying at Shire was a bliss as it has very nice view and you can have a very good time just walking around, enjoying the weather and peace the place has to offer. Yashu, who is the owner of the property is a very nice and welcoming person. She is very approachable, and I had a very good time interacting with her. She will help you wherever she can can and ensure that your stay is comfortable. Kalga is a little village nestled away from the bustling sounds of the city in the heart of the mountains. Be prepared for a little trek of 20-30 min. to reach this village from nearest approach road. But this little disconnectivity with the modern infra is what makes this place so peaceful and helps you connect with nature. Given this is a difficult terrain, don't expect luxury amenities but you will be comfortable. My only request will be to treat this place and its people with respect and humility, and you shall be favoured with lasting memories.

We were a group of 11 on a Himachal trip arranged by Vagabond Travels, staying at Shire. While the scenery was undeniably beautiful, the execution of the trip left much to be desired. There was poor coordination between the guide and local hosts. The guide, unfortunately, was often intoxicated and not involved in any meaningful way. Communication was vague at best — we heard repeated phrases like "we’ll try to arrange it" instead of confident solutions like "we’ll take care of it". This reflected a lack of ownership and seriousness. We were also charged for basic necessities like hot water and garbage bags, which should’ve been standard inclusions. On top of that, the lack of hot water, electricity, or any backup solutions made the stay quite uncomfortable. It was especially frustrating to see that the property had invested in non-essential luxuries like a pool table, instead of using those resources for practical improvements — such as a solar heater or generator, which are critical in off-grid locations like this. While the hosts were polite, their approach felt more like damage control through kind words, rather than actual resolution. The experience didn’t reflect the standards promised by Vagabond, and we believe they must take full responsibility for ensuring better planning, training, and resource allocation moving forward. This isn’t a negative review for the sake of it — it’s an honest call for improvement, so future guests don’t face the same issues we did.

Room cleanliness = unpleasant odor bedsheets ( they have changed the bed sheets only when we have raised the concern) No power = No hot water ( if hot water required they will be charging extra cost for hot water. Also they said their water vessels will get spoiled if they are using it for hot water ) The staff responded quickly when concerns were raised, but it’s disappointing that basic amenities come with extra charges. With better maintenance and clearer policies, this place could be much more comfortable. Villa booked in the name of : Dr monish

I usually have immense respect for those who manage establishments in challenging mountain conditions. It’s not easy to maintain a business in such tough weather, and I deeply admire their resilience. That being said, this review comes after a lot of hesitation, but my experience compels me to share it. The cottage itself was picturesque, and the basics like blankets were sufficiently provided. While issues like a lack of hot water or a heater are understandable in such settings, the overall experience was severely marred by the behavior of the owner and the overall management. The staff members who served us were kind and polite, but the owner was an entirely different story—rude, demeaning, and completely lacking in the art of hosting. Instead of making guests feel welcome, they treated us like misbehaving schoolchildren in need of discipline. The food was another letdown—bland and uninspired, with an unjustifiable price tag. For instance, we were charged ₹80 per parantha, which we didn’t even order. Our initial booking was quoted at ₹5,000, but the final bill shockingly escalated to almost double. The entire experience felt like dealing with someone channeling corporate burnout rather than running a warm and inviting mountain retreat. It’s unfortunate because the location and the cottage had so much potential, but poor management and a lack of basic hospitality ruined it for us. I wouldn’t recommend this place unless you’re prepared to endure unnecessary frustration and a hefty, unclear bill.

I visited the place as part of group last week from 18 nov to 21 nov. It's a nice and cozy place to stay. Scenic view and good food. Not to mention the host( yakshana ) was very welcoming. Cons: 1. Room heaters were not working. 2. I was staying in down villa and 4 of us were staying. And only one blanket was given to each person. (More blankets were requested) Which doesn't make sense given the temperature drops to 0° C at night.

I recently stayed at this beautiful resort in Kalga, and it was everything I could have hoped for in a Himalayan getaway! Nestled amidst lush greenery with breathtaking views of the snow-capped mountains, this place is a haven for nature lovers and those looking to disconnect from city life. The rooms were clean, cozy, and well-maintained with large windows that framed the stunning valley. Waking up to the view of the mountains and the sounds of birds was pure bliss. The resort’s common areas were equally inviting, with spots to lounge, read, or simply soak in the peaceful surroundings. The staff were incredibly warm and attentive, always going the extra mile to ensure we had everything we needed. They even helped organize local treks and guided us to nearby attractions like Kheerganga. The food was fresh, local, and absolutely delicious - perfect after a day of hiking or exploring. If you’re looking for a place to relax, rejuvenate, and connect with nature, I highly recommend this resort. Kalga is a hidden gem, and this resort captures its beauty and tranquility perfectly. Can’t wait to return!
