I stayed in the miners suite with other family staying in the Victorian suite next door. The bed was a king and very soft and comfortable. The bathroom had clearly been recently updated, it had a really cool shower that shoots water from above and the side. It had the most amazing wallpaper of the mine blueprints and some things taken from the mines. It was very quiet and Hot Spring is such a beautiful area. I was tempted to cancel my next days travel plans and stay another night. GREAT experience!

Each of the theme rooms is unique and quirky. Make sure to look at the website photos and decide what suits your own interests. We enjoyed the Miners Room and all of its doo-dads and knick knacks. It was roomy and clean, and we were very comfortable.||||The communal kitchen was stocked, and we easily made breakfast and had a fridge to place our own drinks and food. We picked up bbq at a truck/stand just down the street, which was very tasty. ||||It was right in the center of town, but town is quiet and we had a very comfortable sleep. Easy on street parking right in front.

Hot Springs is off the Mt Rushmore beaten path. The Smith Fargo Suites is a wonderful place to stay in this quite town on the southern edge of the black hills. We stayed in the Mission suite three nights. The suite has a full size sitting room, separate room with a queen size bed, and around the corner, a room with a two person tub and beyond that a washroom with a two person shower. Needless to say, there is a huge amount of room. The furnishings are from an old west mission from the mid 1800. All of the rooms are on the second floor with only stairs to get up, so don't pack too much. There is a kitchen at the top of the stairs which is well stocked with fruits, juices, and breakfast supplies. Breakfast is not cooked in the morning, this was the only draw back for a bed and breaskfast.

Smith Fargo Suites is a renovated, historic tenement house that has been converted into a group of "eccentric," period, bed and breakfast suites. The owners, Dick and Liz, 80 plus year-old youngsters, have done an outstanding job of renovating the building and the suites are delightfully uncommon in all respects. Each suite is decorated with a theme motif and the attention to detail is almost spellbinding. Miner and Cowboy Suites are a bit more rugged with appropriate period knick-knacks found in abundance. The Oriental Suite is abundantly adorned with Asian artifacts and a large round bed with a silk-flowered bed covering. Hallways leading to the suites are also captivating with an interesting array of antiques. All amenities are provided and Dick, Liz's husband, is a chatty, friendly kind of guys who makes sure that the kitchen is amply stocked with everything one would need to make a full, satisfying breakfast.||||If I were to return to Hot Springs, SD I would certainly stay at Smith Fargo again and have no problem recommending it without reservation.

We like local color and this place was great. It was full of things ranging from French antiques to junk store finds. It was fun to look around and constantly see something new. We never saw our hosts but felt at home in our large suite and the kitchen. Breakfast was self serve with a good variety of cereals and breads. Lovely location right on the water. Not much going on downtown though. Place is up for sale so don't know how long rooms will be available.

She knew we were arriving at 10:30 pm. She didn’t not even have A/C running. Then turned heat on not AC. Had to sleep with windows open all night in 90+ weather. People drinking outside window until 3am both nights. Outlets do not work except for one in the kitchen. Don’t plan on doing ur hair. Frig can’t be turned on because it will trip everything else. Didn’t give us the right keys to get in, beds are as old as the 100+ building, faucet not secured to counter and the crazy high tech shower system is a nightmare. Stay away!!

I could have lived with the smell of an antique store and the cluttered rooms, but sleeping on a mattress that might be as old as the rhyolite building itself is unacceptable. I won't speak for all the rooms, but make sure you don't get the Miner's room unless you enjoy sleeping on your great grandmother's mattress.

Don't know what the owners are like, we never saw them.||They left us a note saying "Treat this place like your home".||If I had done, I would have been up all night cleaning out the fridge and throwing away the mouldy cheese (which I did anyway) and out-of-date eggs. Cleaning the coffe maker and pot (which we did anyway). Washing the floor.||If it was my home I'd throw out the stained tablecloth and the blanket with the hole in it and the couch with many many stains.||If it was my home I'd replace the missing mosaic tiles and sort the finish on the bathroom tiles which is coming off and buy decent quality toiletries.||If it was my home I'd buy a bedside light so I didn't have to stumble from the door to the bed in the dark.||If it was my home I'd wonder why a room designated to commemorate mining had model ducks and plastic leaf garlands and an elk tea light holder and a discarded bouquet of artificial flowers and tapes without a way of playing them and cushions decorated with wine corks.||If it was my home, I'd make sure at least one of the TVs - private or communal - worked and that the wifi worked because I'd know visitors would want to get the weather forecast. We phoned to see if they could sort those out and got voicemail which was not responded to.||If they charged half what they do I'd still think it outrageous.
