We stayed on the island. It was awesome. The cabins are dated with plenty of amenities. Hot water and electricity all the time. Amazing views. Fishing wasn't as good as we would've liked, but we also had 3 bad storms roll through. Will come back for sure.

If you are looking for a Northwoods Vintage Lake life experience this is it. It was our goal to spend a week on a lake with a boat and access to the area. This place allowed us to have it all. This is a family run resort, not a corporate overpriced cookie cutter place. Yes the cabins, well are cabins from the 1970s era, exactly what we were looking for. The owners, Dean and Brenda, were more than accommodating. The cabins were clean and we appreciated the retro feel. We stayed on the mainland as we wanted to venture out to the area and our cabin came with a pontoon which we used quite a bit. If you are looking for a relaxing lake experience I recommend this place. If your looking for a cookie cutter bland corporate, or someone else's house (vrbo, airbnb) this isn't for you. We will definately return.

My husband and I stayed in cabin 11 on the island and had rented a pontoon. While the cabins are very dated, they were pretty clean and didn't stink. There were a lot of spiders but that's expected in the woods. We had some issues with our pontoon but Dean was quick to remedy the situation and very helpful, altogether! We would absolutely come back, the VHS collection and vintage kitchenware took me back to my childhood in a way I'd love to share with my kids! The first day we were there it was really hot, even with all the windows open and fans going so that's something to consider if going there during the hot and humid months. The next nights were a lot cooler, unexpectedly, but thankfully our cabin had a well running heater and the fireplace was a nice little touch. We didn't use the facilities on the island but we walked around to take a look. It was definitely a blast from the past, everything is vintage but in well working order and clean! We didn't see much of the mainland area of the resort, but was happily greeted by the loving pup, Tucker when we came into the office.

We recently stayed here for our summer family vacation. We had high expectations after viewing the photos and reading the description, however we were sadly disappointed with the condition of the resort. ||||The facilities and cabins are very outdated. I get that some people want that old-cottage-up-north feeling. However, that doesn't apply to beds. The beds were very outdated as well, and nothing was comfortable about sleeping in them.||||We didn't realize that all of the amenities were located on the island. We did get the taxi ride over to the island to check things out, but we didn't like much about it over there. The game room was dark and scary and games were so old they were hard to view the screens. We're not sure if the tennis court even had a net. We never did find the laundry as nothing had any signage. The 'beach' wasn't a beach, but a small access point to water (notice no beach pics on the website). However, we loved the water, which was sandy and shallow so we had a lot of fun playing in the water.||||The 'beach' on the mainland, well, it really was 10 feet of sand and leaves. The good news for those wanting to stay out of the sun, is that it's surrounded by trees, so it's mostly shaded. Our beach-loving kids wanted nothing to do with it.||||There is an enormous amount of 'stuff' that's clearly been accumulated over the years. I would say that some areas feel more like a junkyard than a resort. Why? Throw the junk out, it ruins any resort type of feeling.||||On a more serious note, most of the docks that we saw were falling apart and a few were at slanted angles so steep that they were dangerous. I watched a grandpa crawl out of a boat on all 4's because he wasn't comfortable walking on the dock. I assume the damage was from winter ice heaves, but you have to fix the things that pose safety risks to your guests!||||In summation, we loved that we could bring our dog, and we loved playing in the water. ||||Our advice to the owners, sell the resort to someone who can put in time and money and bring it up to the level of other resorts in the area, because it really is awful. We will not be returning to A1 Gypsy Villa, even if it were free.

We stayed at cabin 14 on the mainland with other family members staying at 15 which was nearby. These two cabins are away from the rest, surrounded by privately owned properties. We liked this spot. Owner and staff were very friendly and accommodating. Only 4 stars because the cabins could use a little updating. Their condition didn't bother me as much as some other reviewers, but a little could go a long way. Also bummed camp fires weren't allowed, but I can understand why considering the dense pine forests surrounding the cabins. I'd still stay here again

If you want a taste of northwoods lake life this is the place. Vintage cabins on the water some include a pontoon. The owners are more than accommodating. Relax, fish, birdwatching or travel to the areas many attractions. Our cabin was on the mainland and made our outbound travel was easy. Having the pontoon completed the experience.

We recently stayed in June for our honeymoon in cabin #11 on the island. We loved the vintage charm, and the amenities were more than we could ask for. The staff were extremely helpful, offering us advice, hot spots, tips, etc. We stayed for a week with a pontoon and they made sure we knew how to work the pontoon, and where there were good spots to go with the boat. We had so much fun that we opted to extend our stay another night! Dean and Brenda were so generous they gave us a complimentary day with the boat as a honeymoon gift. Definitely recommend this resort, especially the island cabins. My only desire would be for fire pits directly outside each individual cabin. Although they do have community ones available, we would have liked our own fire close to home. Definitely will return! :)

We stayed on the island for our first vacation and couldn't have been happier. Cozy cabins with everything you'll need to cook all your meals. The staff was great, Dean was the MVP! He helped me with all our bags on and off the boat and with a family of 4 it was a lot of stuff. He was always just a phone call away to answer any questions we had or for a tank of gas for the boat. We will be returning for many years to come!
